Tracing shapes builds pencil control

Before letters, children learn to control a pencil with straight lines, curves and corners. Shape tracing practises exactly these movements: circles for round letters, squares and rectangles for straight lines, triangles and diamonds for slanted lines, and stars and hearts for changes of direction.

Every shape gets its own row with a solid model, dotted or dashed copies and an optional freehand box where children draw the shape on their own. Choose the shape size and spacing to fit the child’s age.

Use shapes for maths and art

Shape tracing worksheets also support early geometry: name each shape, count its sides and corners, then colour it. Add a title such as “My shapes” and a “Draw a picture” box for a small art activity.

Printing tips

  • Print at Actual size or 100% so the guide lines keep their real height.
  • Use Grayscale or B&W mode to save colour ink; tracing lines stay visible on home printers.
  • Heavier paper (100–120 g/m²) or a sheet protector makes pages reusable with dry-erase markers.
