Pre-writing strokes before letters

Pattern tracing worksheets for preschool build the movements letters are made of: vertical and horizontal lines, slants for letters such as v and w, curves and waves for s and c, and loops for cursive later. Tracing from left to right also builds the direction of reading and writing.

Each pattern appears as a full tracing row with a start dot, followed (with progression on) by a row where only the beginning is traced and the rest is left for the child to continue.

Make patterns easier or harder

Larger letter size makes patterns taller and wider for beginners. Smaller sizes and dashed or grey tracing make them more challenging. Use the landscape layout for long, flowing rows.

Printing tips

  • Print at Actual size or 100% so the guide lines keep their real height.
  • Use Grayscale or B&W mode to save colour ink; tracing lines stay visible on home printers.
  • Heavier paper (100–120 g/m²) or a sheet protector makes pages reusable with dry-erase markers.
  • For a class set, download the PDF once and print the number of copies you need.
