What makes this redaction permanent?
A simple black rectangle can leave the original words underneath. LyfPDF instead renders each affected page, paints the selected areas into the page image and rebuilds the PDF. That removes the hidden text layer from the redacted page rather than placing a reversible shape on top.
What should be redacted before sharing a PDF?
Common examples include government ID numbers, bank or card details, home addresses, signatures, private phone numbers, medical identifiers, confidential pricing and internal account references. Review headers, footers, comments and repeated fields on every page.
Safe redaction workflow
- Work from a copy of the original file.
- Zoom in and cover the complete item, including labels that reveal context.
- Move through every page; do not assume the same fields appear only once.
- Download, reopen and search the result for terms that should be gone.
Redaction is different from drawing a black box
A normal annotation can leave selectable text, comments or images beneath it. Permanent redaction must remove the information from the exported page, not merely hide it in one viewer. LyfPDF rasterizes each affected page and burns the selected regions into the page image. This removes the underlying text layer from those processed pages, but it also means their text is no longer selectable. Unaffected pages are copied from the source.
Check metadata and information outside the boxes
Visible redaction does not automatically remove document properties, filenames, bookmarks, attachments or comments. Before sharing, use the Metadata Editor, choose a neutral filename and inspect the complete document. Search the downloaded copy for names, account numbers and other terms that were meant to disappear. Also check repeated headers, footers, QR codes and page thumbnails; sensitive context may remain even when the main value is covered.
Verify a high-stakes redaction
Open the output in a different PDF reader, try to select or copy the removed text, and inspect each boundary at high zoom. Redaction can protect information in the shared copy, but it cannot recall a file already sent or replace a legal disclosure review. Keep the original separately, share only the verified copy, and ask a qualified reviewer when a court, regulator or contract requires a specific redaction standard.

Can hidden text be recovered from the redacted copy?
Affected pages are rasterized and rebuilt, so content inside the redaction boxes is not retained as selectable text in the output page.
Can I repeat one redaction box on every page?
Yes. Choose All pages when the same header, footer or fixed field appears in the same place on each page.
Will unredacted pages stay sharp and selectable?
Yes. Pages with no redaction boxes are copied from the original PDF. Only processed pages are rasterized.
Should I use black or white redaction?
Black clearly signals removed content. White can blend into a plain page but may make the redaction less obvious. Choose based on the document and disclosure requirements.
Is redaction the same as watermark removal?
No. Redaction intentionally removes sensitive content. Watermark removal tries to clean a repeated mark while preserving the underlying document.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The redaction workflow runs entirely in your browser.
