How the background removal works
The tool has two ways to remove a background, and picking the right one matters more than any setting.

Quality and Fast portrait modes use a segmentation model (a small machine-learning model, often called AI cutout) that runs inside your browser. It looks at the picture, decides which pixels belong to the person, product or object in front, and makes everything else transparent. The first time you use Quality mode the browser downloads about 126 MB of model files and keeps them in its cache, so later runs start faster. Your image is never sent anywhere; only the model code comes from the network.

Plain background mode does not try to recognise a subject. It removes one background colour, such as white paper, a grey scan tint or a studio backdrop. This is the better choice when you want to clean the background colour from a scanned PDF page, a signature or a logo on white, because it keeps thin lines that a subject cutout might treat as background.

Remove the background from a PDF
