Image Background Remover for PDF

Remove a photo or page background, refine the edge and export a transparent PNG or a new PDF. Source images keep their pixel dimensions; processed PDF pages offer HD, 300 DPI and Ultra rendering.

How does the HD background-removal workflow work?

The workspace supports both normal image files and PDF pages. For a photograph, the tool works at the source pixel dimensions. For a PDF, the selected page is rendered at the resolution you choose, processed, and placed back into a PDF page with the original physical dimensions.

AI subject cutout is the recommended mode for portraits and product photos. Smart color cleanup estimates the background from the outer corners and removes pixels that are close to that color. The sensitivity control determines how wide that color range is, while edge feather softens the transition.

For the cleanest result, use the smallest sensitivity that removes the background, inspect hair and narrow lines at high zoom, and choose a replacement background that matches the final use. Transparent PNG is useful for design work; white is usually safer for forms and printing.

AI subject cutout

Designed for people, products and foreground objects with complex edges.

Smart color fallback

Fast local cleanup for white or mostly uniform backgrounds.

Vector-aware PDF export

Only processed pages are rasterized; untouched PDF pages are copied directly.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG, WEBP or PDF file.
  2. Select AI subject cutout or Smart color cleanup, then set sensitivity and edge feather.
  3. Preview the transparent, white or custom-color background.
  4. Download the page as PNG or build a new PDF.

Quality checklist before export

  • Inspect hair, shadows, glass, thin wires and object edges at high zoom.
  • Use transparent PNG for design work and a fixed background color for forms or printing.
  • For PDF input, process only pages that need background removal.
  • Choose 300 DPI or Ultra when zoom and print quality matter.
  • Keep the original file because processed PDF pages become raster content.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool upload my photo or PDF?

No. The file stays in browser memory. The optional AI model code is downloaded to the browser, but the image itself is processed locally and is not sent to LyfPDF.

Will the output keep HD quality?

Image input keeps its original pixel dimensions. A processed PDF page must be rendered to pixels; choose about 300 DPI or Ultra for better Acrobat zoom and print quality. Pages that are not processed are copied directly from the original PDF.

What backgrounds work best?

AI mode is designed for people, products and foreground objects. Smart color cleanup works best when the background is white, gray or another mostly uniform color.

Can it remove the background from every PDF page?

Yes, but every processed page becomes a high-resolution image page. For long documents, process only the pages that actually contain a photo background.

Can I use a transparent background in a PDF?

The PNG export can remain transparent. PDF viewers normally display transparent page areas over white, so choose a white or custom replacement when the final document needs a predictable printed background.

Why are some hair or fine edges imperfect?

Fine hair, glass, shadows and colors similar to the background are difficult for every automatic cutout. Try AI mode first, then adjust edge feather or use a cleaner source image.

Is it the same as Photoshop?

It follows a similar automatic cutout workflow, but it runs entirely in the browser and does not include Photoshop’s full manual masking system. Always review difficult edges before professional use.

Background removal cannot reconstruct detail that is absent in the source image. A PDF page that is processed becomes raster content, so keep the original file and use 300 DPI or Ultra for important print work.
