PDF Errors, Corrupt Files and Fixes

Diagnose PDFs that will not open, upload, print, copy, convert or display correctly, then choose the safest fix.

Start with the symptom

A PDF failure can come from a damaged file, an incomplete download, encryption, unsupported features, device memory, browser extensions or a portal rule. Do not repeatedly overwrite the original. Make a copy, identify the exact symptom and try the smallest reversible fix first.

When a file is too large

Use Compress PDF only after structural edits. Compression can rasterize pages and remove selectable text, so save a separate copy. If only a few pages are needed, extract the range instead of reducing every page.

Password-protected and encrypted PDFs

Encryption is not corruption. LyfPDF does not bypass passwords or access controls. Open or unlock the document with the correct password and authorization before editing. If the password is unknown, request an accessible copy from the owner.

Recovery checklist

  1. Preserve the original and confirm its file size is not zero.
  2. Try another trusted reader and device.
  3. Download or copy the source again.
  4. Remove only the specific obstacle: rotation, extra pages, size or missing OCR.
  5. Open the final output and compare page count, text and images.

For sensitive files, follow the privacy and security guide. For quality loss, use output-control guidance.

Troubleshooting questions

Why does a valid PDF show blank pages?

The file may use a feature that one viewer cannot render, or the download may be incomplete. Try a current browser and a second trusted reader before modifying the document.

Can compression repair corruption?

Not reliably. Compression may rebuild readable pages, but it can also fail or remove detail. Recover or re-export from the original source when possible.

Why does a portal reject a PDF that opens normally?

Portals may enforce file-size, encryption, page-dimension, filename or PDF-version rules. Read the exact error and change only the failing condition.

Know when to stop

If a document contains irreplaceable records, unusual signatures, attachments or regulated data, repeated browser conversions can make recovery harder. Preserve copies and use the originating application or a specialist recovery workflow. A successful open is not proof that every object, form field or attachment survived.
