US federal holidays 2027, the American public holidays set by Congress, follow the rule in 5 U.S.C. 6103: a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. In 2027 that moves four days: Juneteenth to Friday 18 June, Independence Day to Monday 5 July, Christmas to Friday 24 December, and New Year’s Day 2028 to Friday 31 December 2027.

Federal holiday schedule 2027

Federal offices close and most federal employees are off on these days. Banks that follow the Federal Reserve calendar close on most of them too. The Federal Reserve does not move Saturday holidays to the Friday, so banks often stay open on 18 June, 24 December and 31 December.

Labor Day weekend and the other long weekends

Labor Day is Monday 6 September 2027, so Labor Day weekend runs from Saturday 4 to Monday 6 September. Ten of the twelve days off in 2027 fall on a Monday or a Friday and make three-day weekends: New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Christmas and the observed New Year’s Day on 31 December. Only Veterans Day and Thanksgiving fall midweek. Thanksgiving on Thursday 25 November gives a four-day weekend to anyone who also takes Friday 26 November (Black Friday) off.

State holidays are extra

States set their own lists for state employees and schools. Common additions include Lincoln’s Birthday, Cesar Chavez Day, Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts and Maine, Good Friday in a few states, and the day after Thanksgiving. Private employers choose their own holidays, and most give fewer than the 11 federal ones.
